When to Start Joint Supplements for Your Dog (Earlier Than You Think)

There is a particular moment most dog owners recognise. Your dog hesitates at the top of the stairs. Gets up a little slowly after a long afternoon. Or does not quite launch off the sofa the way they used to. And you think: should I have been doing something sooner?

The answer, for most active dogs, is yes. And the good news is that it is rarely too late to start, but it is almost always better to start earlier than you think.

Here is what 35 years of rescuing large and bull breed dogs with health and behaviour issues has taught me about timing.

The honest answer: most people start too late

Joint supplements are not a treatment for a dog who is already struggling. They are, at their most effective, daily maintenance for a dog who is still well. Think of them the way you might think of any gentle, preventive care: the value is in the consistency, not the crisis.

The most common question I hear is some version of "my dog is only two, is it too early?" The answer for most active dogs, especially large and giant breeds, is no. Two years old is not too early. For many breeds it is just about right.

When to start, by dog type

Large and giant breeds. Dogs over roughly 25 to 30 kg carry significant load through their joints over a lifetime. The bigger the dog, the more sense it makes to start supporting those joints before any sign of wear appears. For Mastiffs, Great Danes, Saint Bernards, Labradors and similar breeds, starting joint support from around 12 months of age is reasonable and well worth considering. I would even go as far as to say start as soon as you can, even from 3 months on. Why?

Bull breeds. Staffies, American Bulldogs, Mastiffs, Boxers and their relatives are built strong but compact, and the way they move, run and play can put real load on their joints. Natural daily support from a young age makes practical sense.

Active and working dogs. If your dog runs off-lead, swims regularly, competes in agility or canicross, or simply walks long distances most days, they are putting more demand on their joints than a relaxed house dog. Daily joint support is a straightforward way to protect what makes all of that possible.

Dogs with unknown histories. We have spent 35 years rescuing dogs who came to us having never had the right nutrition or care. A dog with an unknown past, or a dog who was poorly fed in early life, may have joint health that is harder to read. Starting natural support as soon as they come home is rarely a wrong move.

Rescue dogs of any breed. If you have just welcomed a rescue, it is a reasonable question to ask: what do I not know about this dog's history? Natural, gentle joint support can be a sensible part of settling a rescue in, especially if the breed is one that tends toward joint sensitivity.

Does age matter?

Yes and no. Age matters in that the older a dog gets, the more likely it is that some natural wear has already occurred. But the goal of joint supplements is not to reverse damage. It is to provide the structural building blocks that keep joints working as well as they can.

A dog of any age can benefit from natural joint support. A young dog benefits from protection and prevention. An older dog benefits from day-to-day support for the joints they already have. The timing just shapes which of those benefits is most relevant.

SolaPup Recovery Chews are suitable from 12 weeks of age. There is no upper age limit.

What to look for when you do start

Not all joint supplements do the same thing. The difference between a basic two-ingredient formula and a thoughtful multi-active formula is significant.

At a minimum, look for glucosamine and chondroitin. Glucosamine supports the structure of cartilage; chondroitin helps maintain the moisture and elasticity that keeps joints cushioned. These two together form the foundation of any decent joint supplement.

Beyond the basics, the best formulas tend to include:

MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane), a naturally occurring sulphur compound that supports connective tissue.

Turmeric, used in natural medicine for centuries and a gentle addition to a holistic formula.

Boswellia serrata, a tree resin extract with a long history in traditional natural wellness.

Green Lipped Mussel, from the sea floor off New Zealand, naturally rich in compounds that support joint fluid.

Hemp Seed Oil, a source of Omega 6 fatty acids. Not CBD. Cold-pressed from hemp seeds, gentle and entirely legal.

Hyaluronic Acid, which helps keep joint fluid thick and lubricating.

Vitamin C, an antioxidant that supports tissue health throughout the body.

SolaPup Recovery Chews contain all nine of these actives. 1,142mg per serving. Bacon-flavoured, gluten-free, chicken-free. The same formula in every jar.

How SolaPup approaches it

SolaPup was born from 35 years of rescuing large and bull breed dogs who came to us with complicated health histories. Our French Mastiff Roxy came from a puppy mill with hours to live. We nursed her through three and a half years using natural food and remedies. Every ingredient in SolaPup Recovery Chews was chosen because it is something I would give to our own dogs.

The formula does not change. The approach does not change. Natural, honest, consistent.

If you are wondering when to start joint supplements for your dog, the answer is almost always: now. Before the hesitation at the stairs. Before the slow morning starts. Before you wish you had started sooner.
