Vitamin C for Dogs: What It Is and Why It's in SolaPup Chews
Share
Bailey, a bouncy seven-year-old Golden Retriever, gets checked over by his owner after every long weekend hike. She reads every label, questions every ingredient, and one morning she messaged us with a question we get a lot: "Dogs make their own vitamin C, don't they? So why is it in your chews at all?"
It is a fair question, and one we would rather answer honestly than skip past.
Wait, Don't Dogs Already Make Their Own Vitamin C?
Yes, mostly. Unlike people, dogs synthesise vitamin C in their own liver, which is exactly why it has never been classed as an essential nutrient for them the way it is for us. That is not marketing spin, it is basic canine biochemistry, and we think owners deserve to hear it plainly rather than have it glossed over.
So if a dog's body already makes its own supply, is there any real reason to include it in a joint chew at all? We think there is, but it is a supporting one, not a headline claim.
So Why Is Vitamin C in SolaPup Chews?
The honest answer is that vitamin C plays two supporting roles that are relevant to active joints, even in a dog that produces its own. It is a natural antioxidant, helping to manage the everyday oxidative stress that comes from exercise, play and simply being a dog that loves to move. Every run, swim or game of fetch creates a small amount of that stress on the body, and antioxidants are one of the tools that help the body handle it. Vitamin C also plays a role in collagen synthesis, the protein structure that makes up a good deal of cartilage, tendons and connective tissue around a joint.
That collagen connection is part of why we chose to include it alongside our other actives, glucosamine, chondroitin, green lipped mussel, hyaluronic acid and the rest of the formula, rather than treating it as a standalone hero ingredient. Whether it is a German Shepherd, a Cane Corso or a Golden Retriever like Bailey, the joints of a big, active dog are under daily load, and we wanted every ingredient in the mix to be pulling in the same direction. That thinking goes right back to why SolaPup exists at all, we built this brand in memory of Roxy, our rescued French Mastiff, after using natural, non chemical support to help her through some genuinely difficult health issues.
What the Research Actually Shows
We would rather tell you the truth than oversell an ingredient. There are currently no canine specific joint trials on vitamin C alone that we could find, so we class the evidence here honestly as emerging rather than strong. What it rests on is solid, well established biochemistry, its documented role in collagen synthesis and its antioxidant activity, rather than a large scale dog trial testing joint outcomes directly.
We would always rather say "the science here is still developing, but the reasoning is sound" than pretend a small ingredient has more evidence behind it than it actually does. Some of the other actives in our formula, Boswellia and green lipped mussel among them, do have genuinely strong canine specific evidence behind them, and we think it is worth being just as clear about the strong evidence as we are about the emerging evidence. If you want the fuller picture across all nine actives, our hyaluronic acid piece is a good next read.
Giving Vitamin C Safely, Alongside the Rest of the Formula
Because vitamin C is included as part of a balanced, moderate dose formula rather than a high dose standalone supplement, it is designed to work quietly in the background alongside the other eight actives, rather than being pushed to a level that would be unnecessary given what a dog's liver already produces. As with anything you give your dog, if they have an existing health condition or are on medication, it is always worth a quick chat with your vet before starting something new. The same goes for puppies, our standard dosing is built for adult dogs, so younger dogs need a gentler, age appropriate approach.
This is exactly the kind of considered, ingredient by ingredient thinking that went into SolaPup's Active Hip and Joint Soft Chews, built for dogs who are always on the go, whatever their breed or background.
