Natural Pet Supplements: How to Choose One You Can Trust
Share
Barnaby is an eighteen months old Tibetan Mastiff, built like a small bear, and about to flatten anyone who opens the front door too slowly. His owner adores him and wants to do right by him, so she is standing in the supplement aisle staring at a wall of jars, all promising something "natural." None of them actually say what that means.
It is a familiar moment. "Natural" has become one of the most used, least defined words on a pet supplement label. If you own an active, large or giant breed dog carrying real weight on those joints, knowing what to actually look for matters far more than the word printed on the front of the jar.
What "Natural Pet Supplements" Actually Means
A genuinely natural pet supplement is built from recognisable, minimally processed ingredients, things like glucosamine, chondroitin, plant extracts such as turmeric and Boswellia, and marine sources like green lipped mussel, rather than synthetic fillers, artificial flavouring or artificial preservatives. It should also come from a facility that can prove it, not just claim it on a label. Look for FDA registration, third party lab testing, and facility certifications like NASC or SQF. These show a manufacturer has opened its process up to outside scrutiny rather than simply asking you to take their word for it.
None of this amounts to a health claim. It is about honesty on the label and a supply chain you can actually trace back to a real place, with real people standing behind it.
Why It Matters More for Large, Giant and Bull Breed Dogs
Every extra kilogram of a dog's bodyweight adds real, ongoing load to their hips, elbows and knees, and large, giant and bull breed dogs are carrying a lot of it from puppyhood onward. Breeds like the Rottweiler, Great Dane, Saint Bernard and German Shepherd are all well documented for above average joint stress, simply because of how much frame they are supporting on four legs. What goes into a supplement for a dog like that is not a small decision. It is something their body is working with every single day, for years.
This is the same principle that shaped SolaPup from the very start. Our founder Vips has spent 35+ years rescuing large and bull breed dogs, and it was Roxy, her French Mastiff rescued from a puppy mill with only hours to live, who first showed her how much a genuinely natural, non-chemical approach could do for a dog carrying serious health challenges. Roxy had 3.5 remarkable years after that rescue, and SolaPup exists because of what those years taught us about doing right by a dog's body.
What to Check on the Label Before You Buy
A few practical checks worth making before anything goes in your trolley. Are the active ingredients named with actual amounts, or are they hidden behind a vague "proprietary blend"? Is the serving size clear, per chew or per day, so you know exactly what your dog is getting? Is there a real facility named anywhere, and is third party testing mentioned specifically rather than implied? If a label cannot answer these plainly, that is worth noticing before you buy.
It is also worth checking for common allergens if your dog is sensitive. Chicken is one of the more frequent culprits in cheaper formulas, and a genuinely careful brand will say plainly on the label if it has been left out.
Where SolaPup Fits In
When we built the SolaPup Hip & Joint Chews, we held ourselves to exactly this standard. They are made in an FDA registered facility that is also NASC Certified and SQF Certified, every batch is third party lab tested, and the formula is chicken free with no artificial flavouring and no artificial preservatives. Inside every chew is glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, turmeric, Boswellia, green lipped mussel, hemp seed oil, hyaluronic acid and vitamin C, nine actives, each one there for a reason we can actually explain if you ask. They are bacon flavoured too, and dogs like Barnaby tend to have very strong opinions about that particular detail.
As always, have a chat with your vet before starting any new supplement, especially for a growing puppy or a dog with an existing health condition. They know your dog's individual history best.
