National Pit Bull Awareness Day: Joint Health for the Bull Breeds We Love

Diesel is a five year old American Staffordshire Terrier with a grin that takes up his whole face and a wiggle that starts at his nose and doesn't stop until his tail. Ask anyone who actually knows a bull breed dog and they will tell you the same thing, these are some of the most affectionate, people pleasing dogs out there. National Pit Bull Awareness Day, held on 25 October, exists because that reputation still does not match what so many of these dogs are actually like day to day.

What National Pit Bull Awareness Day Is Really About

The day was created to push back against decades of unfair stereotyping and breed specific legislation that has made life harder for pit bull type dogs and the people who love them, without the evidence to back it up. For us, it is also a day to talk about something a bit more practical, how to actually look after the body underneath that big personality, because a healthy, comfortable dog is a happier dog whatever the headlines say.

The Breeds Behind the Headlines

"Pit bull" is really an umbrella term rather than a single breed. It usually covers the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier and American Bully, and in everyday life it often gets stretched to include Boxers and American Bulldogs too. What they share is a build, muscular, broad chested, compact and powerful, the kind of frame that is brilliant for the zoomies and absolutely built for play.

Why Bull Breed Joints Need Extra Thought

That same stocky, muscular build means more weight moving through a smaller joint surface than you would find on a leaner breed. Bull breeds carry a lot of power in a relatively compact frame, and over years of play, walks and the odd over enthusiastic zoomie session, that adds up. Swimming is a genuinely joint friendly way for a bull breed to burn energy, it builds muscle around the joint without the pounding. Repeated jumping, hard stops on concrete and rough play on tarmac are the things that put the most cumulative load through hips, elbows and shoulders over time, worth keeping in mind on a hot pavement day as much as a cold one.

What We Use at SolaPup

This is personal for us. Between us, Vips and Simon have spent over 35 years rescuing large and bull breed dogs, many of them written off by other people before they ever got the chance to show what gentle, soppy dogs they actually are. It is the same instinct that led us to Roxy, our own rescue, and eventually to building SolaPup, because we wanted a joint chew that genuinely matched what these dogs need rather than a generic formula with a bull breed photo slapped on the front. Every SolaPup Recovery Chew carries nine active ingredients, glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, turmeric, Boswellia, green lipped mussel, hemp seed oil, hyaluronic acid and vitamin C, made in a facility that is FDA registered, NASC member standards, SQF certified and third party lab tested. Bacon flavoured, chicken free, and built to help a bull breed's joints keep up with everything their personality wants to do.

As always, speak to your vet before starting a new supplement, particularly if your dog already has a diagnosed joint condition, and check with them first if your dog has a shellfish sensitivity given the green lipped mussel. If you want to see exactly what goes into ours, here is our Recovery Chews page.
