9 Signs Your Dog's Joints Need Support
Share
Active dogs are wonderful at one thing in particular, hiding when they are uncomfortable. They want to keep up, keep playing, keep adventuring, so they push through. That loyalty is lovely, and it also means the early signs of joint strain are easy to miss.
Here are nine of the quieter ones worth watching for. None of these are reasons to panic, they are simply gentle nudges that your dog might appreciate a little extra daily support.
1. Stiffness after a rest
You know that big morning stretch dogs do, front paws stretched way out, chest low to the ground, and bum high in the air? That is their way of waking up their muscles and joints after a rest.
One of the first things many dog parents notice is that the stretch is not quite as big as it used to be. Maybe the paws do not reach as far forward, the head does not drop as low, or the bum does not go quite as high.
Once they get moving, they often seem absolutely fine, which is why it is easy to overlook. But that slightly reduced stretch can be one of the earliest signs that your dog is feeling a little stiff after resting, a subtle clue that deserves attention. 🐾
2. Slower the morning after a big day
A huge walk or play session yesterday, and today they are a little flat or sluggish. Joints, like ours, can feel the day after.
3. Hesitating at stairs or jumps
A small pause before the stairs, or thinking twice about jumping into the car or onto the sofa they usually launch at without a thought.
4. Sitting or lying down a little awkwardly
A slightly stiff lowering, a shuffle to get comfortable, or a new favourite 'easier' position.
5. Less bounce in the usual places
You know your dog's normal joy. A subtle dip in enthusiasm at the door, the lead, or the park can be worth noticing.
6. Licking at a joint
Dogs sometimes lick at an area that feels uncomfortable. Repeated licking at a knee, hip or paw is worth a closer look.
7. Slowing on longer walks
Keen at the start, fading sooner than they used to. A change in stamina can be about more than fitness.
8. A change in how they greet activity
Less spin, less wiggle, a beat slower to the things that normally light them up.
9. Subtle changes in mood
Discomfort can make any of us a little quieter or less patient. A gentle shift in temperament can sometimes trace back to how their body feels.
What to do if this sounds familiar
First, see your vet. These signs can have many causes, and it is always worth ruling things out properly, especially if anything appears suddenly or seems painful.
Beyond that, consistent daily joint support is one of the kindest, simplest things you can offer an active dog. Ingredients like glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM and green lipped mussel are there to support comfortable movement and post-activity recovery, so your dog can keep doing what they love for longer.
That is exactly why we made SolaPup Recovery Chews, daily natural support for dogs who refuse to slow down. More walks, more play, more tail wags. Browse our hip and joint range.
